How hard is it to get into clubs in New Orleans?

I am planning a birthday trip for me and 7 of my friends. I live in south louisiana (about two hours from new orleans) and we are going to NOLA for my 18th birthday. I was just wondering if its hard to get into clubs down there when you are 18, because I know a lot of place are like 21+.

You can get into tons of places at 18, especially if you’re female. A lot of bars and clubs admit ladies at 18 and men at 21. Try the Republic on Friday nights if you’re into 80s music (trust me, it’s an awesome night, and I was never one to like 80s music). You can always wander through Bourbon. Other clubs include Ampersand, Voila, Le Phare, Metro…check the age for the specific night you want to go, though.

Many clubs will admit customers who are age 18 to 20, just won’t sell them alcohol.

Two years ago it was wicked easy to get into clubs to go dancing…performers even had us go up on stage to sing and dance with them! But last year my underage friends and I couldn’t get in anywhere…despite the fact that we all were carrying drinks and only wanted to listen to the music. If you can’t get into any clubs, I’d recommend grabbing drinks (plastic or aluminum, NOT glass) and going to the river walk…but only in a group and security will kick you out of the area after midnight.

Good luck and have fun! There’s nowhere in the world I’d rather be than New Orleans!

There are plenty of places that will let kids in who are under 21. Bars with poker machines in the bar area are more likely to ask for ID when you order drinks. The poker machines in the bar prohibit kids under age 21 in the bar – period.

You didn’t say if you wanted to drink or not. If you drink, be very cool, don’t fight, urinate in public or do anything rowdy or you can get locked up in a very nasty prison for the weekend and your parents will have to get you out – just a warning that the police won’t give you. I know we have a reputation for "anything goes" but there are tons of cops on Bourbon Street who would probably rather lock up a college age kid than a real dangerous criminal.

If you are just coming to listen to music and not get drunk you can have a very good time.

Cheesy bars on bourbon are pretty easy. But they are not fun and full of trash.

Off of bourbon it won’t be so easy.
