That’s actually not known “in psychology circles”. It is more often passed around as an anecdote by lay people. It’s obviously true of some people like Ashburn, but it’s hardly been established to be true of anti-gay bigots in general. There have been one or two studies that suggested that homophobes might have latent homosexual attraction, but the findings were not repeated and the studies had flaws.
Personally I have no problem believing that most bigots are just bigots.
